Making Perfectly Round Whoopie Pies
Whoopie pies are America's original snack cake. Historians say that Amish women would pack their husband's lunch with these cream stuffed pies, and when they found them they would claim, "Whoopie!"
I recently baked whoopie pies for my family, but unfortunately they looked more like blobs. There was no whoopie! The cakes had spread in the oven into unrecognizable shapes. They tasted good, but they weren't pretty.
There are several different methods to creating perfectly round whoopie pies.
The Scoop Method
Use a cookie scoop to portion out your dough onto the cookie sheet. Don't press the dough balls down. They will spread in the oven.
The best part about this method is that you can make different sizes depending upon the size of your scoop. Make giant pies, or tiny ones!
The Cutter Method
Another super easy trick is to bake the cake in a half-sheet pan or sheet cake pan and then cut it out with round cutters or pastry rings. The great part of this trick is that you can make the whoopie pies into any size and shape you have a cutter for. Heart-shaped red velevet whoopie pies would be perfect for Valentine's day.
